We may have just celebrated the start of the New Year but the Chinese Community will be doing it all again today on January 23rd. This date marks the start of Chinese New Year, this year being a very special one, the ‘Year of the Dragon’. The celebrations, synonymous with fire crackers and lion dancers, are also a chance for Chinese families to get together and have a sumptuous meal.

The Oriental will be making an appearance at this year’s BBC Good Food Show 2011. Taking place from Wednesday 23rd to Sunday 27th November at The NEC, Birmingham , visitors will be able to sample some great dishes from Chef Lee at The Malaysian Kitchen stand. Malay restaurants will be teaming up together to participate to spread the word about how great Malaysian dishes and products are.
Visitors can try a different dish every day : Nyonya Lamb, Chicken Kari and Chicken Rendang.

This October, our very own Chef Weng Tuck Lee will be showing off his skills in the Grand Designs Live Kitchen Experience with Celebrity chef and restaurateur Simon Rimmer from BBC2’s Something For The Weekend.
It’s a real coup for Chef Lee as he will be amongst a wealth of UK culinary talent from Birmingham and around the country at the number 1 consumer home show. On Sunday October 9th Chef Lee will be at the NEC teaching visitors how to make his signature dish, the Malaysian classic Nyonya Lamb.
In The Live Kitchen, top industry chefs will be bringing a taste of their restaurants to the show including, Daniel Galmiche, Mark Lloyd, Nigel Smith, Steve and Claire Love of Loves Restaurant Birmingham, and Fred Ponnavoy who is a taste expert from Gü Puds.
Grand Designs Live Birmingham takes place from 7 – 9 October 2011 at Birmingham’s NEC.

A big thanks to Chef Lee who hosted a half term cooking demonstration for children this week at The Oriental restaurant at The Mailbox. Children learnt to make vegetable noodles and made and decorated their own Chinese lanterns.
